Legal Literacy and Ethical Practice in the Complex World of School Counseling

School counselors must negotiate the competing interests of the overregulated school environment, student’s need for confidentiality and the legal rights of parents to be the guiding voice in their childrens' lives. Updates on these competing interests will be discussed through court rulings and the new 2022 ASCA Ethical Standards. Legal rulings and ethical practice will be highlighted in areas such as sexually active students, bullying, academic advising, child abuse, suicide and threat assessments, and educational records. Particular attention will be given to recent changes in federal, case, and state laws to facilitate participants’ legal literacy and provide guiding principles to support best ethical practice.

Dr. Renee' Schoening will be addressing attendees on Friday morning.

Seven Habits of Highly Efficient and Resilient School Counselors

This session takes the wisdom of Stephen R. Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and makes direct and practical application to the world of school counseling. School counselors will learn practical ways to manage their time, collaborate effectively, and stay resilient during a time of increasing demand. This session will integrate these strategies into development and improvement of a comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model. There will be a focus on resiliency strategies based on contemporary research on embodiment theory and burnout.
